Fun and Active in the Fall: Guest Post from Sirenical

Happy Friday, readers! I’ve been waiting so long for this moment. Hannah from Sirenical.com is such a sweet, supportive reader of mine and I’ve been wanting her to write a guest post about activities to do in the fall with suggestions specific to Vermont ever since the comment on this post:

She graciously accepted the task and, now that I’m feeling the fall air and chill, I’m extra excited to post it for you all! Thank you, Hannah!

Hi! I am Hannah, from sirenical.com.

maze

When Allie was talking about wanting to scale back the frequency of her postings to help with her busy schedule, I suggested she seek out some guest posters. Wouldn’t you know, she asked me!

Here is a great list of things that are fun and active, just in time for fall, along with where you can do them in Vermont. This is just a smattering, there is so much more out there. And remember to always call before you go to make sure they will be open. *** Due to the flooding thanks to Hurricane Irene, please double check that the event/location is still open and that the roads are open as well.***

Enjoy!

Corn Mazes corn

Corn mazes are so much fun, you go up and down, round and round. This is one my favorite fall activities. If you are super speedy and have a considerable amount of luck, you can usually get out in less than an hour. If not, be prepared with some water and snacks as it has taken my friends and I over 3.5 hours to solve the maze before. If you like a good scare, there are also haunted mazes too.

Pumpkin Picking pumpkins

  • Visit a Pumpkin Patch, All of Vermont - There are so many places to choose from, click the link and find one close to your home.
  • Pumpkin Carving Festival, Manchester, Vermont - A great festival dedicated to pumpkin carving, scarecrow making, fall goodies and more.
  • Ellies Farm Market – 952 Darling Road, Northfield, VT 05663-6494, (802) 485-7968 – every year in the evenings surrounding Halloween, Ellie’s has their annual Pumpkin Show with approximately 1500 jack-o-lanterns gracing the hillside next to the market. It is truly a site to see.
Apple Picking
Such a fall favorite and in no time you can have a large bag of fresh picked apples to put away for the winter, turn into apple pie, and make homemade apple sauce!
  • PickYourOwn.org Vermont, All of Vermont - Find a pick your own farm near you!
  • Cold Hollow Cider, Waterbury (on border of Stowe), Vermont - Watch them turn apples into apple cider! Their tours are self guided and free, can’t beat that.
  • Cabot Apple Pie Festival, Cabot, Vermont - A pie contest for adults and children along with crafters tables galore.

Haunted Houses and Walks IMG_9354

  • The Haunted Forrest, Williston, Vermont – This is the largest outdoor theater event in Vermont and a fantastic way to get spooked.
  • Dead North, Danville, Vermont - A truly creepy haunted walk through a corn field, I definitely screamed.
  • Ghost Walk, Burlington, Vermont - Take a tour and hear about all the local haunts and spooks of Burlington, Thea (tour guide) is as knowledgeable as they come and gives a great tour.

Fairs

See the culmination of the summers fruits and vegetables on display and the hard work the local farmers put into their livelihoods. Watch some ox and horse pulls, an animal show, and maybe even a tractor or two. Take a ride on the ferris wheel, and even indulge in some fried dough!

Don’t forget about taking a walk or run along a dirt road as the leaves begin to turn. Take a hike and enjoy the fall foliage from the peak of a mountain. Hop in a kayak and paddle along on a quiet and pristine lake to soak in the colors and crispness of fall. Or a bike ride and feel the brisk air on your cheeks.

The corn maze in Danville is fantastic this year! What fun things are you going to do Allie?

I really want to go pumpkin picking! They usually have apple cider and other goodies at pumpkin patches. I’ll also probably go get me some cider donuts at Cold Hollow Cider. I don’t like regular donuts, but I love their cider ones!

I have only ever gone to a pumpkin patch once! We have always grown our own pumpkins so we would just go out into the back yard.

Want to check out Cold Hollow after the race on the 24th?

I would LOVE to but I’m carpooling with a couple other people who are running too so we’ll have to make sure they’re okay with it, too! Play by ear??

Of course! If they haven’t been, I bet they would enjoy it as well :-)
